Special interest areas

I have recently started counselling adults who have experienced sexual abuse as children. I have worked a lot in palliative care, traumatic death, and worked in acute emergency settings as a nurse, as a counsellor I have had placements with Cruse bereavement. I have also worked a lot with women who have suffered from domestic abuse in the past. My expertise is working with teens 16 plus in rape and sexual assault, recent and non recent, including pre trial therapy, and 18 plus also..

Personal Statement

I am trained in a couple of counselling theories. In the first couple of sessions I like to spend time getting to know my client, and understanding what they are struggling with. Then, based on what my client needs, I use cognitive behavioural therapy to help them identify any negative thoughts and feelings, and teach them coping mechanisms and skills to enable them to think in a way that is more helpful for them.

I teach my clients to listen to their thoughts an identify the unhelpful ones. I often use YouTube, worksheets, and cards as visual aids depending on my clients' learning preference.

Using past career experience as a nurse, I am also able to help explain bodily functions, and psych educate clients about stress, anxiety, and depression, and am often able to explain practices that were carried out in hospital during palliative care or bereavement, which they may have unanswered questions around.
